Body Fat
The stomach area and thighs retain the most excess body fat — with abdominal fat the last to go, and the most unhealthy. The Harvard Medical School's Harvard Health Publications has this to say about abdominal (visceral) fat:
"...Several studies indicate that visceral fat is most strongly correlated with risk factors such as insulin resistance, which sets the stage for type 2 diabetes. Some research suggests that the deeper layers of subcutaneous fat may also be involved in insulin resistance..."
Other risk factors for abdominal fat beside diabetes are cardiovascular disease, hormonal imbalance, liver problems, high cholesterol, heart disease, and stroke.
