Strengthening the back muscles and connective tissue goes a long way toward preventing and treating lower back pain and some back injuries. Back strain is often exacerbated by weak abdominal muscles or weight gain around the stomach. Strengthening the abs and losing weight can make a big difference in back fitness.
Back injuries include herniated disk, ruptured disk, back sprains, muscle injury, and sciatica. Although not injuries, scoliosis and lordosis, abnormal curvatures of the spine, can cause back problems if they are pronounced, especially when exercising. It is important to let your personal fitness trainer know if you have extreme cases of either of these conditions.
